Why Gutters Pull Away From Fascia—and How We Repair the Real Cause
A trough hanging off the board is not a caulk job. Spike-and-ferrule nails walk out, rot eats the bite, ice loads the face, and overflow soaks the wood. We fix the wood, then hang.
Most Chattanooga homes that “need new gutters” actually need the fascia diagnosed. Hidden hangers only work when 1.5-inch #10 zinc-coated screws land in rafter tails through sound wood. If the fascia is spongy, the hanger is a lever that peels the board off on the next freeze.
Spike-and-ferrule is a time bomb
Old systems use a long nail through a ferrule. Thermal expansion and freeze-thaw back that nail out a little every season. The trough sags, water stands, mosquitoes breed, and the fascia face rots around every hole. We do not drive new spikes. We tear the run off, replace the board if needed, and hang hidden screw hangers 24–30 inches on center.
Overflow and missing drip-edge
Packed oak and pine dump water behind the trough. Missing or short drip-edge lets roof water wick the top of the fascia. That is how a “new gutter last year” still shows bubbling paint. Ice and mountain grade
Signal Mountain and Lookout Mountain ice load a full trough. A 2x3 that cannot drain turns the gutter into a beam of ice. Hangers pull. If the trough is pulling because the wood failed, hanging a new 6-inch coil over it is how cut-rate crews create callbacks. We probe, replace with primed lumber or PVC composite, set drip-edge, then hang. The sequence is the product.
