How We Size Gutters for Steep Roofs, Metal Roofs, and Large Homes
A metal roof does not “need bigger gutters because it is metal.” It needs them because water sheets off fast and the pitch factor inflates design area. Large Ooltewah footprints fail the same way with leftover 5-inch.
Design area = actual roof area × pitch factor. A 12/12 uses 1.30. That 2,000-square-foot steep roof behaves like 2,600 in the trough. Pair that with 53-plus inches of Hamilton County rain and a 2x3 outlet, and overflow is the system working as undersized.
Metal and standing seam
Smooth metal has less shingle drag. Volume hits the fascia in a sheet. We almost always hang 6-inch .027 or .032 with 3x4 downspouts, hidden hangers into rafter tails, fascia first. Color-matched coil keeps the edge from looking like an afterthought.
